The benefits of sport and recreational activities for individuals with disabilities are well recognized from both a health and quality of life perspective, yet there remains lack of activity options in which these individuals can engage. The Center has modeled after the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s full continuum of care wellness program.
The goal of the wellness program is to improve the quality of life for those individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and paralysis through regular and consistent physical activity. The program will offer children and adults with SCI and other neurological diseases the opportunity to get the physical activity they need to help build and improve strength, flexibility, balance, endurance, and cardiovascular health as well as to increase socialization and boost overall well-being and confidence. The program is designed to help individuals explore their exercise options (including land-based exercises, functional electrical stimulation, and cardio-pulmonary activities) to enhance their quality of life.
